How to work from home

We are at a crazy time right now; we could never have imagined that something like this would happen to us. Due to the coronavirus a lot of people are forced to stay home. For most of us this means working from home as well. This can be really difficult, less productive and it can make you crazy. For now, we have to make the most out of this situation, and to help you with this, here are some tips on how to work from home. 

 

Happy tip #1 Make sure your technology works

The first thing you need to do when you start working from home is to make sure you have all your equipment at home. Take your work laptop home. Do not forget your keyboard and charger. If you do not have a work laptop, make sure you have the passwords you need to log into the programs on your own laptop.

 

Happy tip #2 Set up some rules

Make a clear agreement with your team about deadlines, division of tasks and calls. For example, what platform are you going to use for calls? Skype, Zoom or Google Hangouts? Make sure you have an agreement on this and check if it works.

 

Happy tip #3 Create the perfect work space

As soon as you start working from home you need a quiet place where you can do your work. Start with looking for that perfect place. Once you have found it, you have to clean your desk and make sure you have minimum distractions. Also, make sure you sit behind a desk and never work from your bed, it may be comfortable, but naptime is inevitable.

 

Happy tip #4 Set up some more rules

You already have agreements with your team, but even more important are the agreements you make with your family. It will probably be crowded in your house, if your partner and kids are home as well. Set up some rules so they know they cannot disturb you during your working hours.

 

Happy tip #5 Find your routine

You are working in a different environment now, but still your work has to be done. If you find a routine it will help you be more productive. What can help you to find a routine is making a plan the day before, set your alarm every morning at the same time and start the day with a team meeting.

 

Happy tip #6 Dress to impress

I know, it is tempting to stay in your pyjamas all day long, because it is really comfortable. But if you’re dressed for bed, your brain will think it’s bedtime. You will be more productive if you put on your regular clothes, because your brain will be put in work mode. Another plus of wearing regular clothes: you will be less ashamed if your boss unexpectedly Skypes you and you are wearing a neat shirt instead of an old pyjama.

 

Happy tip #7 Keep your pets away

Let’s just say: a picture is worth a thousand words, right?

 

Happy tip #8 Plan ahead

You will probably have a lot of time on your hands right now. This might be the perfect time to reflect the previous months and already plan ahead. Make new strategies and business plans or create some new business cards.
